The giant gold 2.5 ounce 1855 Kellogg Proof $50 gold piece has long been one of the most valuable pieces of the California Gold Rush period . . . as indicated by it being called the "King of Territorials" and auction records exceeding $750,000!
Thanks to the discovery of the SS Central America it is now possible to acquire an authentic piece of the California Gold Rush period. The large and beautiful $50 Kellogg Ship of Gold Commemorative is one of the most beautiful and affordable coins in the market. They were struck with gold that was assayed by the office of Kellogg & Humbert in the 1850s and sank with the SS Central America in 1857.
The coins available today are listed in the Guide Book to United States Coins (Redbook) as commemorative restrikes. They were struck from August 20, 2001 through September 12, 2001, which was the 144th anniversary of the date that the gold was on the high seas on its way to New York . . . but sadly, the S.S. Central America sank on September 12, 1857, never reaching its final destination.
A lot of our customers get started with us by purchasing one of these coins and when they get them . . . THEY LOVE THEM! Believe me when I tell you . . . THEY ARE IMPRESSIVE!!!
The original issue of these coins has been sold out for some time and most of them sold for as much as $5,000 each. Monaco recently purchased a small cache of these coins and are now offering them for only $3,950.
With the recent Ten Year Anniversary Special Edition of Coin World magazine commemorating the treasure coming to market, and the $20,000,000 treasure display at this week's Long Beach Coin Expo, these coins will not last long. Don't hesitate . . . call Monaco Rare Coins now before this small supply is gone!

Quarter Eagle ($2.50 Gold)
NGC / PF63
6-8 Minted
Proofs of all early Bust gold coinage is excessively rare. Of the seven proofs that have been certified there is little doubt there have been resubmissions. It is the opinion of the author that 4-6 coins are extant with three of the certified examples in the PF66, which Jeff Garrett states, in his Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, may actually be the same coin! The example offered here exhibits highly reflective fields with beautiful frosty, fully-struck devices. Garrett lists the 1831 quarter eagle in proof as excessively rare with an average grade of the few survivors at PF63. A notable auction record exists for a PF64-Cameo in early 2006 for $148,350. We are offering this PF63 beauty for $132,500.
Paper money has been issued by governments, or want-to-be governments in this case, for hundreds of years, and these interesting survivors of the Confederate States of America serve as confirmation that paper money is an illusion of value which eventually fades – some quickly, and some over a longer term – but make no mistake, all paper money eventually fades into a memory.
"The trifling economy of paper, as a cheaper medium, or its convenience for transmission, weighs nothing in opposition to the advantages of the precious metals... it is liable to be abused, has been, is, and forever will be abused, in every country in which it is permitted." --Thomas Jefferson 1813
Issued at the onset of the Civil War in 1861, the Confederate states attempted to solve their vast financial problems by issuing their own paper money – not unlike the Federal Reserve does today each time we have financial problems in our modern-day economy. Confederate notes held little monetary value due to a lack of gold and silver reserves in the Confederacy as well as their setbacks on the battlefield. Though not official legal tender, southerners traded these notes as a medium of exchange up until the bitter end, at which time they became worthless.

From 1861 to 1864, Confederate notes were printed in denominations of $.50, $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, $500 and $1000. The notes offered here are all of the $10 denomination and all are certified by Paper Money Guaranty (PMG) which is affiliated with Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. There have been a significant number of appearances of these 1864 $10 (T-68 variety) notes with frayed edges and discoloration, and countless low-quality, uncertified examples sell for fifty dollars, sixty dollars, seventy dollars and much more. The notes offered here are exceptional quality notes that were assembled over a period of time by a noted paper money collector, and it is obvious that extreme care was taken with every purchase. After I negotiated the purchase of these historical notes, I carefully culled the best of the best and sent them to PMG for grading, certification and encapsulation. Simply put, for the money . . . these are good as it gets.
Today, Confederate notes are valuable collectibles and an important part of United States history. They make a perfect addition to any coin or currency collection. Every note is guaranteed to meet or exceed your expectations or your money will be fully refunded. Call your Monaco account representative today and buy as many of these as you can . . . they will not last.
