The 1854-O is the third-rarest of all collectible Type I Double Eagles behind the 1861 Philadelphia Paquet, which has only two known, and the 1856-O with 25-30 known. Most of the surviving specimens are in the very-fine to extra-fine range. Ownership of an attractive "condition census" 1854-O is considered the hallmark of a truly great rare gold coin collection. It is listed among the coins featured in the highly publicized book, 100 Greatest United States Coins.

The recent Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins simply states, “the 1854-O double eagle issue has become nearly priceless.” The obvious popularity of this coin puts it in a category which demands one's attention each time the coin makes itself available. Seldom does a Type I Double Eagle bearing this date and mint-mark stay on the market for long. The most recent auction data for this rarity is November 2008, when a PCGS AU55 crossed the block realizing $603,750. This is an impressive amount considering the financial turmoil which prevailed in late 2008. The highest price ever realized was for an AU58 example which sold private treaty in late 2004* for $675,000, and worthy of note is an AU53 reported selling in early 2005* for $368,000.

Note: Only 20 coins in all conditions have sold at auction from 1991-2009, with average grade being XF45. There is no doubt many of these were the same coin seen previously.
