Byron Reed
Byron Reed born on March 12, 1829 was a real estate businessman, local politician in Omaha, Nebraska and an American Pioneer. After Nebraska achieved statehood, Reed was the foremost real estate agent as he helps to found the first real estate office in Nebraska Territory. However, there were many other things that Byron Reed was known for, one thing in particular being collecting.
Through all of his different ventures, Byron Reed also found time to be quite an avid and prolific collector of many things, especially American coins. In fact many numismatists consider him to be the preeminent and one of the greatest collectors of the 19th century. This is the reason that when it comes to coin collecting, Byron Reed is still brought up in many conversations on the subject. His collection included colonial and United States coinage as well as paper money and sulters’ tokens. His collection is thought to be one o the most complete in the history of the united sates. One of the other reasons that Byron Reed is considered to be such a great American coin collector is the fact that according to the experts he had one of the largest numismatic libraries in Midwestern United States. Upon Reeds death the library was donated to the City of Omaha and his collection is currently housed in the Durham Western Heritage Museum. For all of the above reasons, Byron Reed is still considered to be one of the greatest collectors of all time, if not for anything else for being a prolific American coinage collector. If you are interested in learning more the best place to do so is through the Durham Western Heritage Museum or through one of the great resources available to collectors and numismatists online.
