Many people collect coins, and some of the most enjoyable coins to collect are the error coins. Error coins are coins that are minted with errors, and these errors are ones that are not caught at the Mint during quality control checks, but are missed.

These coins make it out into circulation, and depending on the type of error, and how many coins were produced with this error, will affect how valuable the error has made the coin.

Not all error coins are extremely valuable, small errors of a certain nature are sometimes common and thus the coins produced are not especially valuable, but they still can be fun for a collector, especially a beginner to collect.

When a coin is minted, it involves machines and humans both. Each of these factors, the human factor, and automation and machines can affect the minting, and each issue can result in error coins. The U.S. Mint is very careful and they work hard to try and catch errors before the coin leave the mint. This results in a low amount of error coins making it into circulation from the U.S. Mints.

But, fortunately for those coin collectors that collect error coins, coins with errors on them still do make it into circulation. Coin collectors have collected Error coins for likely as long as coins themselves have been produced.

Error coin collecting is fun, but it can also be expensive, depending on how serious a coin collector you are. Coin collection around the world work to try and find error coins, and sometimes serious coin collectors will pay a lot of money to obtain certain types of error coins.

The edge of a coin might be flawed. Or, if it has a logo it might have a repeated section, or a missing section. It depends on the type of coin, and the type of error, but while error coins are fun to collect, they can be hard to find unless you purchase them from another collector, in which it may be pretty expensive.
