There are many different commemorative coins that have been issued over the years in order to commemorate a number of different events and historical moments in U.S. history. Most of the commemorative coins that have been issued and are in circulation and or valuable to collectors were issued from 1960 and later. However there are many examples of commemorative style coins from earlier although they are not as common as other coins. When commemorative coins are issued there are usually a number of themed coins that are issued continuously for a certain length of time or in regular circulation for a period of time annually, for example. These coins are used to commemorate many different things. For instance, sometimes commemorative coins are used to highlight historical events, ancient monuments, or national symbols.
There are a few differences between different types of commemorative coins that are issued that you may want to be aware of. Regular issue coinage, for example, when talking referring to commemorative coins is usually referring to coinage that are issued for everyday commerce use and are usually in circulation for long term period. On the other hand there is what is referred to as non-circulating legal tender. This refers to legal tender that actually, legally can be used to purchase goods or services, however it is not usually intended to be used for this purpose and is usually intended as a collectors item.
